Pastime Paradise / Stevie Wonder / Songs In The Key of Life Tamla Records (1976)

You may recognize this song from the Coolio song, “Gangster’s Paradise,” from the soundtrack of the 1995 film Dangerous Minds. I always liked that song, but once I found out where it came from, it just made me respect Stevie Wonder even more.

The instrumentation is so intricate, and seamless. He uses the strings to create a very heavy environment and compliments it with lyrics that beg deep questions and concepts. He speaks on the need to act now, and not become complacent based off of what was, and not to become too comfortable with what can be that we forget to act at all.

“Same Player” ft. Kahlil Daniel / RG / The Palisades Propper Paper Productions (2013)

New. Music. Tuesday.

Here’s a song I did with my man Rob Gee over at Propper Paper. We just hit the studio one day, he played the track, sung me his chorus, and I laid it down. Dug the concept, thought it was some cool chill sh*t. He threw it on his first mixtape, “The Palisades,” and here we are.

Rob is an awesome producer, his beats are smooth as are his rhymes. I’ve known him and the Propper Paper crew since high school and their style was always legit. Their a group of talented go get it fellas with the attitude to back it up.

To find more out about RG and Propper Paper visit: www.propperpaper.com

More soon on Propper Paper and it’s other members.

…for now enjoy.

“Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” / Kendrick Lamar / good kid, m.A.A.d. city TDE/Interscope Records (2013)

Your boy Kendrick Lamar!

Premiere of the “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” video! The landscaping, and costuming is beautiful. Looks like a classic music video. Mike Epps’ cameo appearance adds good character, lmao, he always makes me laugh.

…but who’s Molly?

Check it out!

“All I Do” / Stevie Wonder / Hotter Than July Tamla Records (1980)

I could go down the list for days trying to pick my favorite Stevie song. However, I find myself having spurts where I’m really feeling one at a particular time. I eventually move on, but something about this song just keeps pulling me back. It’s smooth, soulful, and compelling all at the same time.

It’s from the album, “Hotter Than July,” which also features classics like, “Happy Birthday,” “Lately,” and, “Master Blaster (Jammin).” The album was inspired after Stevie met and collaborated with Bob Marley. He recorded it at his newly acquired Wonderland Studios in LA.

Njoy!

“Sometimes, I feel I really am blessed to be blind because I probably would not last a minute if I were able to see things.” - Stevie Wonder

I found Stevie in 1995 at the age of 5. It wasn’t even through one of his classics. He caught my attention through one of his more recent songs that he had out at the time called, “For Your Love,” which actually won him two Grammys. I became obsessed quick and needed to know more about this guy.
After that, I came to know that he was the author and illustrator of so many other songs that I had already heard and loved. That’s how you know your a timeless artist, when you still have hits and songs that grab people of all ages 30 somethin years into your career! From then on, he has always remained in my top 5 artists of all time and has been monumental in shaping my musical taste.
Happy Birthday Stevie!

“Hollywood” / Rufus ft. Chaka Khan / Ask Rufus

This song and it’s harmonies and melodies are so smooth. It’s “fine” kind of music, like nothing wrong it kind of R&B. It could definitely be the west coast equivalent to Gladys Knight’s “Mid-night train to Georgia.”

The whole reason, I decided to play this album this week was based off of this song my mom showed me off of this vinyl a little while ago.

Happy Mother’s Day! :)

“Better Days” / Rufus ft. Chaka Khan / Ask Rufus ABC Records (1977)

This song goes. The drums, bass, and guitar ride very easily together. It’s funky yet smooth. I recognized this song after Mary J Blige sampled it on her 2003 album, Love & Life, with the song “Finally Made It (Interlude).” It was co-written by Chaka and the melodies slide right in to the track.

Listen.
